Example 9

Find ferrocene-type structures, but with ruthenium as the central atom

Objectives

  • how to draw ferrocene rings
  • use of any bond type
  • comparison of structure and fact searches
  • Tips

    1. Use 5-membered rings of the type shown and connect every C atom of the ring to the central Ru atom.

    2. Use any as the bond type connecting the Ru to the C atoms. To do this you can either:

    a) draw them all as single bonds and then individually change each by clicking on the bond and selecting the appropriate bond type from the bond attributes menu

or b) From the top menu bar, click on the arrow and select Any from the bond attributes shortcut menu.

    3. Run the search as a substructure search by selecting Implicit Free Sites from the Options in the Commander screen

    4. Compare results to those retrieved by a fact search for cn=*ruthenocen*

Number of Results: Structure search >800, name search >350
