(last updated 17 November, 2009)

To access the CrossFire databases, all users must use the CrossFire Commander graphical interface, which is available free of charge to all users at subscribing sites. Please note that the Mimas CrossFire service is available to academic users only.

Commander 7.1 SR2 (build 70) was made available in September 2008. We strongly advise all Windows PC (XP, Vista or Windows 7) users running earlier verions of the Commander to upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of the enhanced features (e.g. extended results sorting and grouping, simplified full-text linking, clearer query and results pages layout) and bug-fixes included in Version 7.1.

Commander 7.1 is not available for Windows 2000 or Apple Macintosh; Windows 2000 users should continue to use Commander 7.0 SP2 and Mac users should continue to use Commander V6.

Download the latest version of the CrossFire Commander - available for Windows PC (XP, Vista and Windows 7) only .

Article Resolver

Commander 7.1 includes the ability to link to the full-text of articles using your institution's own OpenURL Resolver. (LitLink/LinkFinderPlus/DiscoveryGate Literature Services which were used by previous versions are not used by version 7.1). If your institution has an OpenURL Resolver, the Commander 7.1 installation file that you download will automatically be configured to use it. If not, Commander 7.1 wil be configured to use Elsevier's default Resolver ('CrossFire Literature Service').

Please note that whichever version is used, you will only be able to view full-text articles for which your institution has licensed access permission.

Add-on Products

AutoNom for Commander

AutoNom is no longer included in Commander 7.1, due to licensing restrictions; users wishing to retain AutoNom are advised not to upgrade to V 7.1.

ChimePro 2.6

ChimePro 2.6 provides plug-ins for Internet Explorer and Netscape which allow structures exported from the Commander to HTML files to be manipulated. The Commander V7.1 installer does not include ChimePro. If you wish to install it on your PC, please download it from the Symyx website (you need to register first, but the download is free of charge).

Additional Structure Editors - Symyx Draw

ISIS/Draw and MDL Draw have been replaced by Symyx Draw, which may be used as an alternative structure editor for Commander V7.1. The Commander V7.1 installer installs the CrossFire Structure Editor only.

We recommend that you do not install Symyx Draw unless you are already familiar with it and want to use it in preference to the CrossFire Structure Editor. You can download it from the Elsevier CrossFire Commander website free of charge if you wish. Please note that you will need to select MDL Draw as the structure editor (using Options - Select Structure Editor) in order to use Symyx Draw. NB Symyx Draw is not yet supported for Windows Vista; please contact the CrossFire helpdesk (email: crossfire@mimas.ac.uk for advice.
